Ruko Office Layout: Furniture Plan Guide 2026

2026-10-16

An office in a ruko (Indonesian shophouse) is the reality for most local businesses: a long building with a 4–5 metre frontage, 12–20 metres of depth and two to four floors. Narrow at the front, deep at the back, with daylight entering only from two ends — these three constraints decide which furniture actually fits and works. This guide summarises how to plan a ruko office systematically: zoning per floor, layouts for 4–5 metre widths, space-saving furniture and a specification checklist for ordering from the factory.

Ruko characteristics and what they mean for furniture

Shophouses are designed for trading, not administration. Occupants therefore face a distinctive combination: side walls are shared with neighbours so there are almost no side windows; the staircase takes 15–25% of each floor plate; and aisles must carry people and goods at the same time. The furniture implications:

  • Use vertical space — tall cabinets and wall-mounted shelving replace low units that eat floor area.
  • Keep aisles at 90–110 cm so two people can pass — desk sizes and row spacing are calculated from the remaining aisle, not the other way round.
  • Choose light colours that bounce daylight from the frontage to the darker rear.
  • Go mobile — castored furniture lets rooms change function during peak hours.

Zoning per floor

The rule of thumb: the higher the floor, the more private; the deeper you go, the quieter it gets. The most common pattern:

FloorZoneKey furniture
Ground floor (front)Reception, waiting, small meetingCompact reception desk, folding meeting table, guest chairs
Ground floor (rear)Sample store / pantryetteSliding-door cabinet, sample shelving
Second floorOperations & working teamsBench workstations, mobile pedestals
Third floorManagers, finance, focus roomsL-desks / manager desks, filing cabinets
Top floor / rear cornerArchive & old documentsTall filing cabinets, bookshelves

Layouts for 4–5 metre widths

This is the most common frontage, and one of the following arrangements almost always wins:

  • A bench run along one wall with a 90–110 cm central aisle. Efficient and tidy for concentrated work; leave the opposite wall for low cabinets.
  • A two-person island in the centre for intensive collaboration — two stations face-to-face with at least 80 cm circulation on both sides.
  • A corner L-desk for a team lead: one wing for the computer, the other for quick discussions.
  • A single-staff reception at the front — reception desk models with integrated display shelving save more than a metre compared with a desk plus separate cabinet.

For desk counts per area, see our office capacity guide; general small-space strategies are in small office space optimisation.

The furniture that saves the most space

Some furniture types hand back “free metres” in a narrow building. Tall cabinets and bookshelves use the vertical wall surface that usually sits empty — while dividing zones. Cabinets with sliding doors such as BG-2569B need no swing clearance, ideal for tight ruko aisles. Mobile pedestals keep personal archives under the desk, removing the need for a cabinet per person. For waiting areas, a compact side table like BG-2522T serves the sofa without blocking the walkway.

On upper floors with lower ceilings, choose cabinets at most 120–160 cm tall to keep proportions right. The full range is in our filing & storage collection.

Lighting and colour for a long, narrow space

Since daylight only enters from the frontage and the back, the middle of a ruko is always the darkest. Three cheapest steps: choose light finishes (G28 light oak or white) on desks and cabinets so light reflects deeper; add furniture-integrated lighting — an LED display-niche bookshelf like BG-2582B lights a corner without a new ceiling point; and avoid all-dark schemes in areas with no windows at all. Reliable spots for colour experiments: the reception and meeting areas — the zones guests see most.

Electricity and cabling in a ruko

Shophouse wiring is often improvised when the building is first erected. Before arranging furniture: make sure each floor has one main circuit with its own breaker; run cable trays or trunking under the desks; and never leave cables crossing an aisle — dangerous and damaging to a professional look. The full organising principles are in our office desk cable management guide. For a small server or NAS, provide a ventilated UPS point — not a closed cabinet.

Quick FAQ

How many staff fit in a 4×15 m ruko office? One 4×15 m floor typically fits 8–12 workstations with wall benches and mobile pedestals, depending on the meeting space you keep. Per-square-metre calculations are in the office capacity guide.

Can furniture be delivered floor by floor? Yes. Mixed-container orders can be scheduled in stages so operational floors are ready first — the scheme is explained in the mixed container guide.

Are tall cabinets safe on a ruko’s second floor? Safe when loads are spread near structural walls (rear or central walls), not mid-span. For very tall units, fix anti-tip brackets to the wall.

Can desk sizes be adapted to my ruko’s width? Yes — benches and desks can be produced to custom sizes so the aisle keeps to standard. Send your per-floor plan for a configuration recommendation.
