How is office furniture packed for shipping from China to Indonesia? The standard: knocked down, wrapped in five protection layers — surface film, corner foam, heavy-duty carton, moisture protection and unit straps — then loaded into the container with anti-shift securing. The goal is simple: your executive desks, workstations and filing cabinets arrive without scratches, without bent panels and without a missing bag of bolts after a 7–14 day sea voyage. This guide summarises the packing standards we use for shipments to Indonesian ports — written directly by the BG Office Furniture team (Foshan BG Office Furniture Co., Ltd.).
Five protection layers: the anatomy of export packing
Proper packing is not simply “put it in a carton”. Each layer handles one type of risk along the journey — from our warehouse in Foshan to yours in Jakarta, Surabaya or Medan:
| Layer | Material | Risk it prevents |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Surface protection | Protective plastic applied to the panel surface | Scratches on HPL / melamine finish |
| 2. Corner & edge protection | EPE foam and thick carton corner protectors | Impacts on panel corners — the most fragile point |
| 3. Export carton | Heavy-duty corrugated carton, sealed neatly | Stacking pressure during stuffing and the voyage |
| 4. Moisture protection | Silica gel in large cartons; clearance from container walls | Humidity and temperature swings on a tropical voyage |
| 5. Unitising & labelling | Stretch film / straps + model label on each carton | Cartons shifting; misidentification at unloading |
Small components — bolts, screws, hinges, locks, handles — are never shipped loose. Everything is bagged and labelled per model and per set, then placed inside the main carton. One swapped hardware bag can halt the installation of an entire floor; labelling takes seconds.
Knock-down or fully assembled? Almost always knock-down
Our desks, workstations and cabinets ship knock-down (flat-pack): panels and frames separated, hardware in labelled bags. Here is the comparison:
| Aspect | Knock-down (export standard) | Fully assembled |
|---|---|---|
| Space efficiency | Saves 30–40% of volume vs assembled | Takes up far more container space |
| Freight cost per unit | Lower — more units fit per container | Higher per unit |
| Damage risk | Lower; panels packed tight inside cartons | Corners and joints more exposed |
| On-site assembly | Simple tools; guide + labelled hardware per set | No assembly needed |
| When it is chosen | Nearly all export orders | Only specific items, on request |
The knock-down system in detail — tolerances, assembly sequence and arrival tips — is covered in our knock-down furniture guide. For container loading capacities, see the 20ft & 40HQ container guide.
Moisture protection: the most overlooked layer
The voyage from South China to Indonesia takes 7–14 days at high humidity, with a sharp temperature difference between the loading and discharge ports. Without protection, moisture can enter the cartons, settle on panel surfaces and cause a musty smell, mould in the corners, or weakened glue lines. Three practices we apply: silica gel in large cartons; goods kept clear of the container walls; and a plastic / stretch-film barrier. The principles are explained in our humidity-resistant furniture guide.
Inside the container: how cartons are secured
- Heavy at the bottom, light on top. Cabinets and heavy panel cartons form the base; lighter units sit on top, following the container axis rather than blocking the rear doors.
- No empty gaps. Spaces between stacks are filled with dunnage cartons so the load cannot move when the vessel rolls.
- Anti-shift securing. Stacks are strapped and wrapped in stretch film; nothing leans directly against the container doors.
- Sequential photos + seal number. Empty container → half loaded → full → seal applied. The seal number is recorded and sent with the shipping documents.
A compliance note for international shipping: where packaging uses wooden components (for example a crate or pallet for a special item), most countries — Indonesia included — require the wood to carry ISPM 15 (heat-treated) marking.
The same logic applies when costing a shipment: the simulation is in our 40HQ container price guide, and the strategy for combining several series is in the mixed container guide.
When the container arrives: a quick inspection checklist
Good packing still deserves verification at unloading. These six steps protect your position if something is wrong:
| Step | What to do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Before opening the doors | Match the seal number against the shipping documents | Proof the container was not opened en route |
| 2. The moment doors open | Photograph outer layers: wet, dented or shifted cartons | Early evidence if a damage claim arises |
| 3. Count the cartons | Carton count vs the packing list per series | Shortages documented from minute one |
| 4. Unpack step by step | Start with the most accessible cartons; photograph panels before lifting | Damage found as early as possible |
| 5. Keep the packaging | Store cartons and foam until every unit is checked | Claims usually require the original packaging |
| 6. Report quickly | Send a report + photos/video to us and the forwarder | Claim windows are usually tight |
For financial protection, pair this with our shipment insurance guide; the after-sales claim flow is in the warranty & claims guide; and the quality-control side is covered in the pre-shipment inspection checklist.
Quick FAQ
How is office furniture packed for export to Indonesia? Knock-down inside heavy-duty corrugated cartons: panels wrapped in protective plastic, corners cushioned with EPE foam and corner protectors, silica gel for moisture, and a model label on every carton.
Is furniture shipped assembled or knock-down? Catalogue models ship knock-down: 30–40% space saving, safer transit and a lower freight cost per unit. Fully assembled is only available for specific items on request.
What if something is damaged on arrival? Photograph the packaging and panels before unpacking, count the cartons, and report within 7 days. We provide loading photos and shipping documents as supporting evidence; keep the original packaging until the check is complete.
Does standard packing cost extra? Standard export knock-down packing is included in the quotation. Special options — logo cartons or extra protection for glass items — are discussed separately at quotation stage.
